If you’re familiar with Heinlein, you’ll recall that such pissing on the troops actions caused the coup that led to their society.
Rule 1 of a liberal democracy is that the guys with guns be subject to civilians, Rule 1A is that the guys with guns need to be treated well. No coup is about to happen, but stuff like this is caustic to a professional armed force and could bite us in the arse in the future. They deserve better.
